The Rongai Route trek up Mount Kilimanjaro is a thrilling adventure that promises breathtaking landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and the chance to conquer one of the Seven Summits. Here, we'll take you through a day-by-day itinerary of the Rongai Route trek, highlighting the key points of each stage of the journey. Join Kiboko Safaris on this unforgettable expedition to the Roof of Africa.

Day 1: Starting the Journey

Your Kilimanjaro adventure with Kiboko Safaris begins as you arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport. A representative from the company will be there to greet you, providing a warm welcome and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Take this opportunity to rest, acclimatize, and meet your fellow trekkers. In the evening, there will be a pre-climb briefing with your guide from Kiboko Safaris, ensuring you're well-prepared for the challenges ahead.

Day 2: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp (2,650m/8,694ft)

The adventure officially kicks off as you drive to the Rongai Gate, where you'll complete registration and meet your experienced trekking team. The trail winds through dense rainforest, offering glimpses of the captivating flora and fauna that make Kilimanjaro unique. Reach Simba Camp in the afternoon, situated at 2,650 meters, and enjoy your first night under the star-lit African sky.

Day 3: Simba Camp to Second Cave (3,450m/11,319ft)

Leaving the rainforest behind, the landscape transforms into heath and moorland as you ascend to the Second Cave. This day's trek provides stunning views of Kibo and the Eastern Ice Fields. The changing terrain introduces you to the challenges of altitude, but with the support of our team, acclimatization becomes a gradual and manageable process.

Day 4: Second Cave to Kikelewa Cave (3,600m/11,811ft)

As you continue your ascent, the trail takes you through the lunar-like desert saddle, providing a unique and otherworldly experience. Kikelewa Cave, nestled along the route, serves as your camp for the night. The altitude increases, but with the carefully planned itinerary by us, you'll be adapting well to the changing conditions.

Day 5: Kikelewa Cave to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m/14,206ft)

The trail leads you past the striking Mawenzi Peak, offering breathtaking panoramic views. The day's trek takes you to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, situated by a glacial lake beneath Mawenzi's towering cliffs. Here, you'll notice the thinning air, emphasizing the importance of a slow and steady pace in your ascent.

Day 6: Acclimatization Day at Mawenzi Tarn Camp

To enhance acclimatization, a rest day is strategically planned at Mawenzi Tarn Camp. We ensure that you spend the day relaxing, exploring, and adjusting to the altitude. The surrounding beauty provides a serene backdrop for reflection and preparation for the challenging ascent to come.

Day 7: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut (4,700m/15,419ft)

The trek continues towards the alpine desert zone as you make your way to Kibo Hut, the final camp before your summit attempt. The landscape becomes more rugged, and the air grows thinner. We ensure you're well-supported with proper equipment, encouragement, and guidance as you approach the summit.

Day 8: Summit Day - Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,341ft) to Horombo Hut (3,720m/12,205ft)

This is the day you've been preparing for. Begin the ascent in the early hours, guided by the light of your headlamp. The climb is challenging, both physically and mentally, but with the expertise of our safari guide, you'll reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Kilimanjaro. Take in the awe-inspiring sunrise over Africa before descending to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved rest.
